All spectators are expected to pass through the Area 1 Gate leading to the Stadium. The Super Eagles will wear their familiar all-green jersey, while the Argentines will turn out in blue-and-white stripe top and black shorts. The referees will be in red.
There will be a one-minute silence for Super Eagles’ defender Olubayo Adefemi, who died in a car crash in Greece on April 18, and the two teams will wear black armbands in his honour.
Megastar musician TuFace will sing the Nigeria National Anthem in a duet with the winner of a Guinness Promotion for the rendition.

For the first time, cinemas across Spain will show a football game live! If you don’t like football (or soccer if you’re from the US), it’s the worst place on earth to be.

Millions of fans will watch Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry, Xavi and Andres Iniesta clash against Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Kaka, Xabi Alonso and Iker Casillas.

And when Barca defend their home field against Manuel Pellegrini’s side, it will be more than a football match. For hardcores it is another episode in the history of Catalan freedom fighters defending their legacy against Franco’s Castilian fascists.

Inter Milan cools Ronaldinho-led resurgence of AC Milan

The rebirth of AC Milan as challengers for the Serie A title hit a roadblock yesterday as Inter Milan grabbed a 2-0 victory to extend its lead to nine points, although AC Milan has a game in hand.

Still, this Derby della Madonnina, named after the statue of the Virgin Mary on the city's cathedral, proved that AC Milan has made great strides since the beginning of the season.

After all, in the first leg of the derby, Inter clubbed Milan 4-0 and the aging Rossoneri looked like a good bet to struggle for the remainder of the season.

It was yet another victory for José Mourinho, the Portuguese coach of Inter, whose abrasive nature has won him few fans among the Italian media pack, but has transformed Inter from a team reliant on stars into a club that has strong self-belief. That was evident yesterday as Inter lost Wesley Sneijder to a red card in the first half, but didn't wilt.

Mourinho might be persona non grata to the media, but his stock couldn't be higher among soccer coaches and players.

"As a person, he's cultured, intelligent, clear-sighted and a perfectionist," said former Serie A and Italy coach Arrigo Saachi. "As a coach, you just have to look at his record. He's won everywhere. He knows how to win, he knows how to produce teams with great character and consistency.

"He inherited a team that was used to winning in a certain way, with players getting results on the basis of their individual ability or physical strength. This year, Mourinho brought in players who could help him synthesize the play, communicate the collective idea to the others, to create a better team unit."

The Serie A race is down to two teams now, and Italian soccer followers should be thankful the upcoming World Cup has galvanized a couple of aging stars with AC Milan and turned what could be an Inter romp to a fourth straight title into what still could be a race.

One is David Beckham, who's back in Milan because he has to prove himself in top-flight soccer to keep a spot on England's team for South Africa.

But if you're looking for the main reason for AC Milan's renaissance, look no further than Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, better known as Ronaldinho, who has been transformed this season from bored to blazing.

When Ronaldinho arrived from Barcelona last season, and after well- publicized run-ins with the coaching staff and front office over his hard-

partying ways, he looked near the end. Former coach Carlo Ancelotti used him sparingly.

But this year, under new coach Leonardo, a fellow Brazilian, the buck- toothed wonder, 30 next month, has been a revelation. He's not what he was when he was world player of the year back to back in 2004 and 3005, but he's still a force.

Under Leonardo's 4-3-3 system, he is on the left side in an attacking trio with Marco Boriello in the middle and fellow Brazilian Alexandre Pato (out with injuries and replaced by Beckham) on the right. Ronaldinho has shown great production that has earned him nine goals, four from the penalty spot, in Serie A, although he missed a penalty yesterday.

For his part, Ronaldinho says he's feeling the love.

"I feel loved and respected," he explained. "I'm happy. I go on the field upbeat and always try to give my best in order to give our fans a great feeling.

"I have been important and a leading player in all the teams in which I have played. But in fact, I feel that I have accomplished more here in Milan. I am proud of it. In fact, I want to play football for as long as possible, because I feel so happy and complete."

For his part, Leonardo says Ronaldinho's resurgence is no surprise to him.

"We must forget this talk of him being reborn. He was reborn some time ago," the manager said.

There was a big prize at stake Wednesday night at Toyota Park.

And it wasn't the trophy for the final of the 3-year-old SuperLiga, a tournament including four teams from Major League Soccer and four from the Mexican league first division, all of whom weren't quite good enough last year to qualify for the 2009 CONCACAF Champions League.

It was the $1 million that went to the winning team.

"Put that out there, and it will make guys leave everything on the field," Fire coach Denis Hamlett said of the final against Tigres.

But, in the frustrating rule-book logic that can leave an unsatisfying conclusion to big matches, the outcome was decided with the players at a virtual standstill.

Under tournament rules with no overtime, Tigres won 4-3 on penalty kicks after 90 minutes of spirited play ended 1-1.

"When you lose on PKs, it's real hard," Hamlett said. "But those are the rules; what are you going to do?"

It was the first international tournament triumph for Tigres, whose last Mexican league title was in 1982.

For the record, Mike Banner (wide) and Justin Mapp (high) missed for the Fire. Itamar Batista, a Brazilian who scored Tigres' goal with its only shot on goal during regulation, put the decisive penalty kick past Jon Busch, who earlier had saved one of the Tigres' penalty attempts.

"It's a little unjust, but that's the way soccer is," Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco said.

It left the 11-year-old Fire franchise still searching for its first international tournament trophy.

That Tigres, from metropolitan Monterrey, is not one of Mexico's more popular teams was evident in the small number of their yellow-shirted fans in the sold-out crowd of 20,000.

Deft passing, started by Blanco's long sideline run and crossed ball, turned into the Fire goal. Logan Pause chipped a pass to Gonzalo Segares for a pass to Patrick Nyarko, who headed it home in the 10th minute.

Tigres' speed on counterattacks began to have an impact midway through the first half.

After a turnover at midfield, Batista undressed Fire defenders Bakary Soumare and Brandon Prideaux. Batista went left, turned back right, then drilled the ball just inside the far post in the 43rd minute.

"The executive committee of the AFA (Argentina Football Association) resolved unanimously tonight (Tuesday) that the championships in all categories should not start on the scheduled dates," a statement posted on the AFA website (www.afa.org.ar) said.

It said the AFA needed to search for a proper and well-founded solution to the problem of clubs' debts.

Urban Meyer received a six-year contract extension from the University of Florida that pays him $4 million a year and might make him college football’s third highest-paid coach.

Meyer, 45, has won two national championships in four seasons with the Gators, compiling an overall 44-9 record. Florida is 12-1 during Meyer’s tenure against its four biggest rivals -- Georgia, Florida State, Miami and Tennessee.

Only the University of Southern California’s Pete Carroll ($4.4 million) and Notre Dame’s Charlie Weis ($4.2 million) make more than Meyer, ESPN reported. Meyer becomes the highest-paid coach in the Southeastern Conference, just ahead of Alabama’s Nick Saban, who will earn $3.9 million this year.

“Meyer has certainly proven to be one of the top college football coaches in the country and should be compensated as such,” Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley said in a statement. “We’re proud he’s our coach and we appreciate all that he’s done for the Gators.”

Meyer’s previous contract paid him $3.25 million and ran through 2012. His new deal runs through 2014.

His salary isn’t paid by the state-funded university, which recently announced $42 million in budget cuts and the layoffs of nine faculty members and 49 employees, ESPN said. A separate entity called the University Athletic Association funds the school’s athletic department. Brett Bouchy, the owner of the Arena Football League's Arizona Rattlers, told the Orlando Sentinel that the league is set to declare bankruptcy and fold.

The league has not yet made an announcement. But comments second those by Tampa Bay Storm owner Jim Borghesi that the league was shutting down.

"It's just unfortunate we're in this situation," Bouchy told the Sentinel. "Everyone knows myself and Arizona fought hard to avoid this day. The league was divided into two groups and factions. You had one group of committed owners who contributed capital and willing to do whatever it took to bring the league back in 2010. I have been in that group the entire time.

"Then there was another group that just wasn't willing to make the investment. We could never get a consensus."

The AFL canceled its 2009 season in December amid financial problems.

Bouchy, who was trying to gain control of the Orlando franchise, said that 90 days ago he thought there was a "98% chance" the AFL would return next year.

He wouldn't rule out a small amount of AFL franchises regrouping and playing somehow in 2010.

"I don't know how it will happen, but I think there is still a chance the Orlando Predators will be back in some shape in 2010," Bouchy told the Sentinel. "I still believe it isn't over."

“It was interesting the way the people in Seattle pitched it to me,” said Ljungberg, a Swedish international who, since 1998, has played for Arsenal and West Ham United in the English Premier League. “I felt, and it may sound a bit stupid, that I want to try things that are hard. When I went to Arsenal, people in Sweden said my game was more suited for Spain or Italy. I showed I can play in England and here, this team is doing amazingly well when most do terrible in the beginning. But people thought I was nuts to come to America.”

The Sounders (7-3-8, 29 points) have been a revelation in their first season. They lead the league in attendance and played to a 0-0 draw with Chicago on Saturday in their last game before the league’s All-Star Game at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The Monterey Blues women's semi-pro soccer team closed out its second year in the Women's Premier Soccer League with a pair of wins Saturday and Sunday at Monterey Peninsula College.
The wins helped the Blues finish the season with a 4-6 record, a three-game improvement from last year (1-9).On Sunday, the Blues defeated the Portland Rain, 2-1. It was a wink that was never forgotten; certainly not in Manchester. A wink, on a German field of play, in a 2006 World Cup quarterfinal, which accompanied, even celebrated, the sending off of England’s Wayne Rooney. The winker: Cristiano Ronaldo Santos Alveiro, alias Ronaldo. That day, Portugal’s outside-right and a Manchester United team-mate of Rooney. And when in June this year Ronaldo was transferred for an astronomical, record £80 million to Real Mad rid, as world and European footballer of the year, the reaction among United’s fans was strangely muted given that he was quite plainly irreplaceable.

‘France Football’, probably the leading soccer magazine of all, headed a penetrating article, Ronaldo Le Mal Aime. Ronaldo the unloved. Comparing him with the reaction of those fans when previously the hugely talented but idiosyncratic Eric Cantona decided to retire; emerging recently, as we know, as a somewhat unexpected film star and even theatre producer. True, Ronaldo, so often badly maltreated, could occasionally “get his retaliation in first,” as they say in the English game. A shocking foul at Fulham last season on Danny Murphy remains in the mind. But this was the exception rather than the rule and paled into insignificance by comparison with Cantona’s sudden, all too frequent, outbursts of gratuitous violence.

No, I am not thinking chiefly of what happened that evening on the Crystal Palace ground — I was there — when Cantona, sent off and horribly abused by a young local thug, attacked him with a kung fu kick, incurring long suspension. I am thinking rather of such incidents as that on the Swindon Town ground — yes, I was there too — when he suddenly and inexplicably kicked out at John Moncur.

Cantona was an exception; and highly original talent, an attacker at once powerful, highly skilled and supremely original. But Ronaldo is simply protean. What can he not do, on the ground and even in the air? As an outside right — surely his ideal position though as we know, he can drift right the way across the attack, function just as easily on the left though I don’t think this is his ideal role — and at centre forward? He is physically tall and strong, he has stupendous speed and glorious ball control. His right-footed free kicks are phenomenal in their velocity and in their insidious swerve.

There have been many great outside rights in the past. Stanley Matthews, who went on playing successfully into his late 40s; but how often did you see him head a ball or take a free kick? Eddie Johnson and Erik Nevland scored six minutes apart in the second half to lead English Premier League club Fulham to a 3-0 win over Australia's Melbourne Victory in a preseason friendly Saturday.

The win helps make amends for a surprise 2-1 loss to Gold Coast United in the opening match of Fulham's Australian tour Wednesday.

Sometime England striker Andy Johnson opened the scoring for Fulham from a penalty in the 33rd minute when he coolly slotted the ball past Melbourne keeper Mitchell Langerak and into the corner of the net.

Johnson was brought down in the area by a rash challenge from Victory skipper and former Millwall captain Kevin Muscat.

Johnson extended the lead for Fulham in the 67th minute when he eluded the lone defender in a 20-meter run before wrongfooting substitute goalkeeper Glen Moss to score.

Norwegian forward Nevland sealed the win in the 73rd minute when he gathered a pass from South Korea's Seol Ki-hyeon and guided it into the net.

A lively Melbourne side had the visitors on the back foot for much of the first half in front of just over 20,000 fans at Docklands stadium. But despite several scoring opportunities throughout the match, the Victory were unable to beat Fulham and Australia keeper Mark Schwarzer.

Melbourne's best chance came in the 62nd minute when Archie Thompson collected a Tom Pondeljak pass in front of the goal, but bounced his shot off the crossbar.

Yesterday saw Mexico take on Panama in the 12-team CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 Football tournament that took place in Houston, Texas. And according to dailycontributor.com, the match finished with Panama holding Mexico to a 1-1 draw.

Mexico defeated Nicaragua in their match on Sunday with a 2-0 victory, but that apparently didn’t stop the squad receiving bad criticism over their performance, which was described as disappointing. And it looked as though the match ended in chaos.

It seems as though there was some sort of conflict between the Mexican coach Javier Aguirre and a Panamanian player, which led to fights breaking out amongst the fans in the stands. You can watch highlights of the match on the video we have below.

A large-scale strike in South Africa has led to renewed fears that stadiums will not be ready for the 2010 World Cup finals.About 70,000 workers have downed tools in a pay dispute after negotiations broke down earlier this week.

The workers are reportedly seeking a 13 percent pay rise and there are worries that a prolonged strike could jeopardize key projects such as the 94,000-seater Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg.Stadiums in Cape Town and Durban are also facing a race against time to be finished by the deadline of December set by FIFA, world football's governing body.

Six entirely new stadiums are being built for the World Cup, while four are being modernized, along with a host of other infrastructure projects to help cope with the influx of nearly half a million .Despite the scale of the strikes, a FIFA spokesman told CNN on Wednesday that they were confident the stadiums would be ready on time.

"We expect all the stadiums to be fully operational by the end of December," he said.

South Africa is the first African country to be awarded the World Cup finals and the main concerns have centered around crime and security as well as the readiness of the stadiums.

In less than a year's time, the real show begins for South Africa.The recent Confederations Cup was but a dress rehearsal for the biggest show on earth, football's World Cup.The exhibition tournament is usually played a year before the World Cup but this time around, it took on greater significance.

The selection of South Africa as the site of the 2010 World Cup caused great consternation throughout the football world. Aside from the obvious concerns about whether the country would be organized enough and financially viable enough to prepare enough stadia for the tournament, there were concerns about the validity of the home nation from a footballing standpoint.

The most successful World Cups usually have the home nation making an impact and the Bafana, Bafana boys did little going into this tournament to offer any kind of hope that they would be competitive. That changed.What hasn't changed is the real concern that surrounded awarding the Cup to Africa for the first time involved as to what would happen off the pitch from travel to infrastructure to handling the estimated 500,000 tourists to crime and security.

Sepp Blatter, FIFA boss, wants more than anything for the tournament to be success. He was the man who pushed for the tournament to be staged in South Africa.His endorsement of South Africa's staging of the Confederations Cup was moderate. He gave the nation a 7.5 rating out of 10. While 75% may be good in a math test, it's a mark that needs to go up when staging a World Cup. Most of those marks were earned by the football that was played -- which was superb -- and the hospitality.

Blatter was also pleased with the security. South Africa has been under the microscope as one of the most crime-infested countries in the world.There were 39 reports of criminal acts, most of them petty thefts. The Egyptian and Brazilian teams had money and items stolen from their hotels although news reports indicated the Egyptian's had consorted with women of the night which led to the thefts, a report Egypt denied.

The regular crime statistics are startling. South Africa averages 50 murders a day and in 2007-08 there were officially 36,190 rapes, 14,201 carjackings and those are just the reported crimes.The official word is the same as you'd get when you travel to any major city -- be careful where you go, travel in numbers and don't do anything that would put you in harm's way.

The truth is though there has never been this level of concern for personal security in any other World Cup tournament.The government plans on spending 1.3 billion rand ($200 million Cdn) for increased security, including an additional 41,000 specially deployed officers.How good that security will be and what will happen away from the stadium is another question.

Six of the cities where games will be held -- Polokwane, Pretoria, Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Johannesburg and Bloemfontein -- are in the central or northern part of South Africa, the highest crime areas of the country."So I am satisfied with the way the competition went but there are still challenges which will have to be dealt with in terms of transport and accommodation," Blatter said.With a little less than a year left before the tournament begins, moving fans to and from sites remains difficult and reports indicate more than 15,000 hotel rooms are still needed.

Hotel groups are either upgrading or building new hotels with as many as 15 new hotels scheduled to open in June of 2010. That's 10 days before the start of the tournament. Even the most optimistic organizer will find it hard to believe that all the projects will be finished on time.

The success of the U.S. men's national soccer team

The best thing to come out of the success of the U.S. men's national soccer team is that, finally, soccer isn't a four-letter word in the American sports vernacular. American soccer is exciting and, most importantly, American soccer is competitive. People in America like to win, and on an international stage, something the United States has never done in men's soccer. Until now. Sure the U.S. didn't win the final of the Confederations Cup, but that squad showed us there can be no moral victories anymore. Losses will no longer be considered 'good results.'

We've also established that soccer isn't boring like everyone told us our whole lives. And we've established that this incarnation of the U.S. men's national team can play with any country in the world. But can soccer really become a mainstream sport in America? Can soccer be more than the grass and dirt equivalent of gymnastics? Will Americans really care about soccer for more than one month every four years?

As Jonathan Tannenwald of the Philadelphia Inquirer put it today, soccer's success might just depend on the media.

A better indicator will be the number of newspapers - yes, I said newspapers - that send reporters and/or columnists to next year's World Cup, and what the TV ratings are at home.

Now, while we can debate the importance of newspapers going over to South Africa (the later start times will in fact help the deadlines for newspaper writers, but that's not the point), the fact remains that U.S. soccer's success -- and the success of all soccer in this country -- is tied to the Worldwide Leader.

ESPN has caught (and with the addition of La Liga and English Premier League matches coming soon, passed) Fox Soccer Channel as the go-to place for relevant soccer in America. Not only do ESPN and ABC have near-exclusive rights to any big USMNT match, but the Disney enterprise will be in charge of presenting the entire 2010 FIFA World Cup to America's growing soccer public.

So why did this particular line from Rece Davis at halftime of the U.S. match with Brazil rub me the wrong way?

"In 348 days we will be back in South Africa for the start of the 2010 â€¨World Cup."

That's right. Because ESPN wasn't in South Africa, so how will they be back? Sure, we watched matches from South Africa for the last few weeks, but if you heard John Harkes repeatedly gripe about the images from the World Feed, you'd know how frustrated the commentators have been calling games from a sound stage in Bristol and not from a press box in Johannesburg.

In fact, by all accounts the ESPN crews, including Harkes and JP Dellacamera, watch on TVs smaller than those we had when we were kids. Let me restate that clearly: The commentators for ESPN are watching the game on TVs smaller than the ones we have in our moms' basements. (Yep, went there.) We are in a better position to call the games than the announcers for ESPN. And that's not to say the announcers have done a poor job. Granted, Harkes is a bit of a homer (and for some reason hates Clint Dempsey), but the duo of he and Dellacamera do a solid job commentating the action. And ESPN has made a strong effort getting a crew of top-notch international soccer announcers, including Derek Rae, Adrian Healey and, yes, Tommy Smyth.

So why isn't ESPN spending the money to send a crew to these matches? Well for one, if every country in the world put in full video requests for FIFA matches, the entire crowd would be full of people holding cameras, not vuvuzelas. So we're stuck with the World Feed. But the commentators should still be on-site. If you're calling a game, you should be at the game. You should get a true feel for the crowd. You should get a sense for the weather and the conditions of the pitch. I'm sure they do their due diligence in researching both teams, and with the phone and Twitter and text messages the state-side commentators can have nearly full access to the squad, but it's not the same.

ESPN needs to figure out a way 2010 to send their top soccer people over to South Africa in 2010. If they can send people to cover the Olympics (even though their network didn't televise the Games), they can figure out a way to do this. Heck, if they can send a full crew with sideline reporter to Omaha for two weeks of college baseball, they can send a few people to the World Cup.

I understand it's difficult to have every match covered on television and expect the announcing crew to be able to broadcast each one. With 64 matches taking place in just a few weeks, it would take more announcers than CBS uses for March Madness for ESPN to properly cover everything. So here are a few suggestions.

Send your top announcing crew over at the start of the World Cup to cover all United States matches. We need to have someone at all the events, and who better than the men calling the matches on TV.

Send a sideline reporter to the U.S. matches to cover trends, interview families and other fans and provide human interest stories in between matches. We need to learn about these players like we learn about obscure Olympians every four years.

When the knockout round begins, there are only two matches per day. Send announcing crews -- or at the very least sideline reporters -- to every live match. We need to get a feel for the city, the teams and the emotion surrounding the event.

For the first time in nearly three years, Spain's normally potent attack couldn't pick apart an opponent and ended up on the losing end.

The United States halted Spain's rewriting of football's records book on Wednesday with a 2-0 semifinal victory at the Confederations Cup that snapped the European champion's record winning streak at 15 games.

Jozy Altidore took advantage of Spain's lethargic defense for a first-half goal and goalkeeper Tim Howard made a number of outstanding saves in the second half before Clint Dempsey sealed the Americans' first appearance in a major final.

One year after an outstanding European Championship win that seemed to remove the perennial underachiever tag, Spain returned to earth with its first loss since November 2006, a span of 35 matches that only Brazil's 1993-96 team can match.

"This is an accident, a little step backward," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. "We have to look forward with optimism."

In near freezing conditions at the Free State Stadium, Spain outshot the Americans 29-9 but couldn't break through the stifling defense.

"The difference between them and Spain is that they scored two goals and we couldn't score with 10-12 shots on goal," Spain striker Fernando Torres said. "When you shoot too many times on target and you see the ball is not getting in you feel frustrated. You can't always play good and tonight was a disappointing night, for sure."

The United States backline often lunged to block many chances, which had to come from the wings with the Americans clogging up the midfield, where Spain's attack comes from.

"We had to pick our poison at times because they can do whatever they want with the ball," Howard said. "We said, 'You're not going to go through us. You're going to have to go around us."'

While the American defense excelled, Spain conceded for the first time in five games after blunders by fullbacks Joan Capdevila and Sergio Ramos. Spain last conceded two goals in a 3-2 win over Greece on the way to last year's Euro 2008 victory.

"Everything," Capdevila said about what went wrong. "A streak is over, and we have to start from zero. This sobers us up."

With a potential final against Brazil beckoning, Spain may have overlooked an opponent it had never lost to in three matches, especially after its previous four wins had come against inferior opponents.

"I hate to classify it that way," Del Bosque said. "But certainly FIFA's ranking shows we're first and that's an objective number."

Although Spain will remain in the record books, a second major trophy could have put those who doubted Spain's credentials as one of the best at ease. It will now play either Brazil or South Africa for third place on Sunday.

"We hope it works to help us and that we learn from the errors," Torres said. "Now we'll go out looking to win the third place, which we'll play like a final."
